Chapter 7

Red

“Are you kidding me, Red? How can you trust him?” Kevin’s voice is laced with frustration as he confronts me the following day.

We’re in the barn, storing away the newly delivered wreaths, and Kevin’s words echo off the wooden beams. The scent of pine and fresh hay fills the air, mingling with the cold bite of winter seeping through the cracks in the walls.

I take a deep breath, steadying myself before responding. “Kevin, he’s not what you think. He’s really trying to help.”

Kevin narrows his blue eyes at me, his brow furrowing deeply. “Trying to help? Red, he works for the company that wants to tear this place down. How can you be so naive?”

I stop what I’m doing, turning to face him fully. “It’s not about being naive, Kevin. Nick’s shown me a different side. He’s genuinely invested in saving the farm now. He even came up with the idea for the Christmas tree decorating contest, and look how much support we’ve gotten from the town because of it.”

Kevin runs a hand through his hair, clearly agitated. “And you think that changes everything? A few good deeds don’t erase the fact that his company is trying to buy us out.”

I sigh, feeling the weight of his words. “I know it’s complicated. But I believe in giving people a chance. And right now, Nick’s working hard to make things right. He even stayed for dinner with us last night. He’s trying to understand what this place means to us.”

Kevin’s expression softens slightly, but his eyes still hold a trace of doubt. “I just don’t want you to get hurt, Red. I care about you, and I care about this farm. It’s been in your family for generations. What if he’s just playing you?”

I place a hand on Kevin’s arm, looking up at him earnestly. “I appreciate your concern, Kevin. Really, I do. But I need to trust my instincts. Right now, they’re telling me that Nick is sincere.”

Kevin sighs, his shoulders slumping slightly. “I hope you’re right, Red. For all our sakes.”

I nod, giving him a small, reassuring smile. “Me too, Kevin. Me too.”

As we finish storing the wreaths, I can’t help but think about the look in Nick’s eyes when he talked about his own struggles, his own quest for happiness. I’m not a fool for trusting him, am I?
