Chapter 7
Red
âAre you kidding me, Red? How can you trust him?â Kevinâs voice is laced with frustration as he confronts me the following day.
Weâre in the barn, storing away the newly delivered wreaths, and Kevinâs words echo off the wooden beams. The scent of pine and fresh hay fills the air, mingling with the cold bite of winter seeping through the cracks in the walls.
I take a deep breath, steadying myself before responding. âKevin, heâs not what you think. Heâs really trying to help.â
Kevin narrows his blue eyes at me, his brow furrowing deeply. âTrying to help? Red, he works for the company that wants to tear this place down. How can you be so naive?â
I stop what Iâm doing, turning to face him fully. âItâs not about being naive, Kevin. Nickâs shown me a different side. Heâs genuinely invested in saving the farm now. He even came up with the idea for the Christmas tree decorating contest, and look how much support weâve gotten from the town because of it.â
Kevin runs a hand through his hair, clearly agitated. âAnd you think that changes everything? A few good deeds donât erase the fact that his company is trying to buy us out.â
I sigh, feeling the weight of his words. âI know itâs complicated. But I believe in giving people a chance. And right now, Nickâs working hard to make things right. He even stayed for dinner with us last night. Heâs trying to understand what this place means to us.â
Kevinâs expression softens slightly, but his eyes still hold a trace of doubt. âI just donât want you to get hurt, Red. I care about you, and I care about this farm. Itâs been in your family for generations. What if heâs just playing you?â
I place a hand on Kevinâs arm, looking up at him earnestly. âI appreciate your concern, Kevin. Really, I do. But I need to trust my instincts. Right now, theyâre telling me that Nick is sincere.â
Kevin sighs, his shoulders slumping slightly. âI hope youâre right, Red. For all our sakes.â
I nod, giving him a small, reassuring smile. âMe too, Kevin. Me too.â
As we finish storing the wreaths, I canât help but think about the look in Nickâs eyes when he talked about his own struggles, his own quest for happiness. Iâm not a fool for trusting him, am I?
